How to Choose a Topic
Choosing a topic is one of the first things to do in thesis writing. To accomplish this task, you will need to keep in touch with your professor or discuss your ideas with a thesis supervisor. The topics and issues to be researched in a thesis will vary considerably. They will depend on the specialty and profession in which the student plans to specialize. Besides, graduate committees may set limits on the topics and subjects students plan to explore in their thesis projects, according to the goals, mission, and specialization of the educational institution. For example, you may be expected to research business development opportunities for a small business organization run by a university of your choice.
Thus, before you sit down to write a thesis, you will have to agree on the topic and problem to be explored with your professor or supervisor. You will need to meet with any of them and discuss these ideas personally. You may need to create a draft of your proposal to justify the relevance of your chosen topic for the professor. Once the topic is approved by the Graduate Committee, you will be free to launch the process of writing.
How to Approve the Topic
Before you start writing your thesis, the Graduate Committee must approve your topic. Moreover, the Committee will need to approve the language of your writing and the perspective you choose to use in your study.
You can seek Graduate Committee’s approval when you have completed at least 45 credits in your Master’s program. This is the time when most Master’s-level learners must submit a comprehensive thesis writing plan with a topic of their theses. Both the topic and the plan will be approved during a Graduate Committee meeting, which is why both documents must be completed before the meeting.
You will need to fill in the application. You will have to gain a preliminary topic agreement from your graduate supervisor. You will have to attach the written agreement provided by your professor to the application. These confirmations can come in different forms, from an email message to an official memo that approves your topic.
Once the topic for your Master’s thesis has been approved, it will be valid for one year. If you fail to finish the thesis before this time, the validity of your topic will expire, and you will have to seek another approval from the Graduate Committee.
Likewise, if for some reason you opt for changing the topic of your thesis, and this change is dramatic and visible, you will need to re-apply for approval from the Graduate Committee. No additional approval is needed for any minor changes made to the original topic of your thesis.
Your Thesis Supervisor
As a Master’s thesis student, you will have a personal supervisor and a personal advisor who will accompany you throughout the writing process. You can choose your supervisor among the most distinguished professors. You can seek a supervisor among the members of the University Council. Make sure that it is a full-time professor working with the University. Your advisor must have at least a Master’s degree in your specialty.
Both the advisor and the supervisor have an obligation to guide the student throughout the process of thesis writing. The supervisor assumes full responsibility for ensuring the scientific rigor and validity of thesis research. In the meantime, thesis advisors take an obligation to address students’ concerns on a day-to-day basis. They are particularly helpful in developing and implementing a thesis writing plan.

Getting Approval of Your Master’s Thesis
The Graduate Committee will thoroughly evaluate and analyze your Master’s thesis. You need to be sure that the topic of your thesis is still valid by the time you submit the final version for approval.
- Review the deadlines for submitting the final version of the thesis to the Graduate Committee.
- Submit a copy of the Graduate Committee’s topic approval and a copy of your original thesis for further approval. Use the electronic application form to accompany your thesis.
Check if the electronic version you have submitted and the hard copy of your thesis is the same. You must upload and submit a thesis, which incorporates all major and minor corrections proposed by your thesis supervisor and your graduate advisor. If you are not satisfied with the result and decide to seek an appeal, your electronic version will serve as proof in this process. You cannot proceed with your graduate thesis application if you have failed to complete the application form.
Notifications to your email
The online graduate application will need your formal permission to forward email notifications to you. If you have provided such approval, then you will receive any updates related to your graduate thesis in your email. You will be able to monitor the progress of your thesis using our software application. In case you decide not to provide such permission, you will receive a snail mail notification from the graduate committee once your thesis is approved.
Master’s thesis: electronic version and subsequent publication
Your thesis will be stored in the form of metadata, and it will be published in the online thesis database. It will include your name, your thesis title, any translations (if available), and your supervisor’s name. The metadata will also include any keywords that will speed up the process of looking for your dissertation. The final approved version of the thesis will be stored in the database until it is needed.
The abstract for your thesis will be published in full text. However, it will happen only if you provide official permission. You can use the application form to provide your permission, and your thesis will be published and made available to other readers. It may take a year before your dissertation is published, as the Graduate Committee follows all legal and ethical procedures to ensure the integrity and relevance of your project. Besides, if your thesis project is associated with some trade secrets, some time may be needed until these secrets can be published. Remember that, once the thesis is published, it will become a publicly available document. The hard copy of your thesis will also become available to others.
If you decide not to give your permission, your thesis will only be available to university staff.
Make sure that you provide your student services with a hard copy of your thesis.
You must submit two hard copies of your thesis to student services. One of these copies will be archived, and another will be taken by your supervisor. Student services will evaluate your thesis and provide their assessment results. The hard copy must be identical to the electronic version submitted to the Graduate Committee. You do not have to hand the hard copy directly to the supervisor – the student services department will do it for you.
Please clarify with your supervisor and your responsible department if they need any additional hard copies of your project. If needed, you will have to take care of these copies on your own.
